Complete DIY Taiwan Hiking Guide: Yushan, Xueshan, Xiangshan + Taipei Itinerary

Updated: 5 hours ago

TAIWAN TRILOGY : YUSHAN - XUESHAN - XIANGSHAN

Taiwan Hiking Adventure Overview

Taiwan is widely known for its vibrant night markets, efficient transportation system, and modern cities, but beyond the urban landscapes lies one of Asia’s sougth after hiking destination. This also finishes my second hiking goal as mountaineer in order to complete the famous Asian Trilogy together with my recent hike in Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia.

During this DIY Taiwan hiking adventure, I explored two of Taiwan’s most iconic mountains, Yushan and Xueshan, while also visiting famous destinations including Taipei, Jiufen Old Street, and Elephant Mountain. Compared to my side trips in Kota Kinabalu, most of my destinations here are city focused after all the mountain climbs were completed.

This DIY guide covers:

  • Taiwan hiking itinerary

  • Xueshan and Yushan permits

  • trail conditions

  • expenses and transportation

  • Taiwan High Speed Rail experience

  • cherry blossom locations

  • night markets

  • practical DIY hiking tips for international hikers

Why Taiwan Is a Paradise for Hikers

Taiwan offers a rare combination of:

  • alpine mountain landscapes

  • efficient transportation

  • accessible trail systems

  • organized hiking permits

  • affordable food

  • reliable public transport

  • rich biodiversity

  • modern urban comforts

Unlike many countries where remote hiking logistics become complicated, Taiwan allows hikers to transition from city trains to high elevation mountain trails within hours.

Essential Preparation Before Hiking Taiwan

The most important part of this trip was securing permits for both Yushan and Xueshan.

Since these mountains are among Taiwan’s most popular hiking destinations, permits and accommodations should ideally be reserved weeks or even months ahead.

Major Highlights of the Taiwan Hiking Trilogy

Summit of Yushan

This was easily one of the most rewarding hiking experiences I’ve had internationally.

The final ascent above the sea of clouds created a dramatic sunrise atmosphere with near freezing temperatures despite it not being winter season.

The summit marker represents a major milestone for many hikers across East Asia.

Summit of Xueshan

Xueshan offered a completely different experience from Yushan.

Long ridge sections, colder temperatures, and high altitude exposure made the hike physically demanding yet visually rewarding.

The summit views revealed layered mountain landscapes stretching endlessly beyond the clouds.

Cherry Blossoms in Taiwan

Wuling, Lishan & Alishan

One unexpected highlight of this Taiwan adventure was experiencing cherry blossom season across multiple mountain regions.

The soft pink blossoms transformed entire landscapes into cinematic alpine scenery.

Top blossom areas visited:

  • Wuling Farm

  • Lishan

  • Alishan Forest Recreation Area

Taiwan Wildlife Encounters

Taiwan’s protected mountain ecosystems remain incredibly rich in biodiversity.

Some wildlife encountered included:

  • Formosan deer

  • squirrels

  • alpine birds

  • marten sightings [check this reel]

  • Formosan salmon habitats

These encounters made the trails feel alive and significantly more immersive.

Taiwan High Speed Rail Experience
bullet train of taiwan at chiayi train station

The Taiwan High Speed Rail became one of the most convenient parts of the trip.

It allowed seamless movement between major cities and mountain regions while dramatically reducing travel fatigue.

For DIY hikers, Taiwan’s transport system is honestly one of the biggest advantages of traveling the island.

Elephant Mountain viewpoint

Elephant Mountain is a short but steep urban hike that offers one of the best skyline views of Taipei. It is especially popular during sunset and night photography, where Taipei 101 becomes the focal point of the cityscape.

Best Night Markets Visited

Shilin Night Market

One of Taiwan’s most famous night markets filled with:

  • street food

  • shopping alleys

  • local snacks

  • vibrant evening atmosphere

Luodong Night Market

Luodong Night Market offers a more local and less tourist dense night market experience. It is well known for traditional snacks, open air seating areas, and a slower pace compared to Taipei markets.

Jiufen Old Street

Jiufen Old Street is a historic mountain town filled with narrow alleys, tea houses, and nostalgic architecture. It is especially atmospheric during foggy evenings, where lantern lit streets create a cinematic ambiance.

Detour to Lishan

A side trip to Lishan offers a high mountain agricultural landscape surrounded by orchards and misty valleys. It serves as a peaceful contrast to both the intensity of hiking routes and the energy of urban centers.

Helpful locals
a very helpful local during our travel from lishan to chiayi

Across Taiwan, travelers consistently experience approachable and helpful locals, especially in rural mountain areas. From assisting with transport schedules to offering directions in remote trailheads, the hospitality adds safety and confidence to DIY hiking routes.

Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall

Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is a major cultural landmark in Taipei, featuring large open plazas, traditional architecture, and ceremonial guard changes. It reflects a significant part of Taiwan’s modern history and is often included in city itineraries.

Ruifang Station gateway

Ruifang Station serves as a key transit hub for travelers heading to Jiufen, Shifen, and nearby mountain and coastal destinations. It is a strategic connection point between rail and bus systems for northern Taiwan exploration.

Bus transportation compared to the Philippines

Taiwan’s bus system is highly organized, punctual, and digitally integrated, especially in rural and mountain routes leading to trailheads and tourist spots. Compared to the Philippines, where schedules can be more flexible and route clarity varies by region, Taiwan offers a more predictable and easier DIY navigation experience. Real time updates and clear stop systems reduce uncertainty for hikers and tourists.

Free hiking permits

Many major trails in Taiwan, especially in protected areas like Yushan and Xueshan, offer free or low cost hiking permits depending on route classification. These are usually applied online with clear quotas and scheduling systems. This structured system helps preserve mountain environments while still allowing accessible access for international hikers.

Tips and Reminders:

  1. Many ATMs at the airport have no English translation. Make sure to activate your translator apps to scan between options.

  2. Convenience stores and MRT information centers only accept cash when adding load to your easy card. Nearest when at the Terminal 1 of Taoyuan airport is the 7 eleven at ground floor.

  3. Easy card is the most convenient mode of payment in Taiwan that can be used in buses, trains and even paying in some stores.

  4. Qika Lodge is the nearest stop where you can spend the night before pushing to the summit of snow mountain or Xueshan. It has the basic facilities like bunked beds without mattresses, kitchen, water supply, toilets, and changing room. You need to bring necessary sleeping and cooking needs for you camp.

  5. We started our summit push at 10pm the same day of day 1. This resulted to a very difficult hiking experience for us due to lack of sleep. We only did this because we needed to be back to the bus station before 12 noon the next day. If you have enough time, I highly suggest to camp at the higher camp ground or make it a 3 days climb.

  6. Wuling Farm has very limited buses. You must make sure to plan it very carefully.

  7. Jiufen Old Street can be very crowded at night but equal beauty can be seen in the morning with very few tourists.
